And, it had been a while since I saw it so I didn't know the film had been changed from its theatrical release.

In my earnest opinion, the updated ending shown here completely eliminates the tone of the film. Call it bias, as I really and truly enjoyed the film as I saw it in theaters, but this ending shown here ruins the film for me.

Creepy story based on the short story from Steven King. I felt the acting and cinematography in the film was excellent. The projected images of older times in black and white displaying previous tenants jumping from the building was a bit much as it seemed to connected to that being portrayed from a television set.

I liked the deviation of the story from the original story and it did a great job of portraying the lead as a prisoner. I was a bit disappointed in the ending, however, as it was!

I found that disappointing in that it appeared that the producers of the film attempted to make it some how more unsettling, but I found the original ending much more clever.

I had no idea the ending of this rental version had been changed on this version from the one I saw in the theater, and in previous cable runs.

Thought I had lost my mind Then we looked the movie up on wikipedia and found out about the various endings King's greatest talent is creating complex, three-dimensional characters, and special effects can't compensate for a failure to live up to that ideal.

Cusack is magnificent, and considering about half the film is. The two complement each other so well. My students invariably like this film a great deal.

The short story this movie is based on is one of King's best. A movie adaptation held high promise, and friends gathered upon my enthusiastic recommendation to watch.

The movie begins interestingly enough, with the threat of supernatural violence hanging in the air above a skeptical, believable author.

The two principal actors do a great job with their roles. After what seems like four hours of viewing special effects and really, truly odd "threatening" illusionary scenes, all those viewing this flic in my living room kept hoping for an ending.

All the cinematic special effects are here: there's Hitchcock's zoom scene lifted from Vertigo, there's the rapid cuts from hundreds of scary movies.

Not a bad film to show to a class of cinema students who are interested in learning the craft. A brief beach scene seemed to indicate some conclusion.

When the movie shifted back to yet additional scenes in the "silly room" which is how my friends were referring to it, at this point , everyone but me left for more productive pursuits.

Other reviews expressed disappointment with the ending; I was relieved just to get to it. Any ending at all would have been welcome after the "tortures and tribulations.

It's been a long time, and many a movie, since I last welcomed an ending with the thought that "I stuck through it I actually made it!

Sadly, , perhaps the best short story of them all, did not. Please try again later. Verified Purchase.

Sadly, , perhaps the best short story of them all, did not. Bottomline advice: enjoy the book. One person found this helpful. This is a must-watch for horror-thriller fans.

It may not be all the way up there with The Shining, but this is definitely one of the best Stephen King film adaptations I've ever seen.

I'd never watched a John Cusack movie before this, and his acting is absolutely pitch-perfect which it needs to be, since he's alone onscreen for most of the movie.

In other words, it's one of those truly scary movies that also happens to be artfully written and produced. I actually liked the film more than the original short story.

I do prefer the theatrical ending over the director's cut, which is what you're getting here, but both radically different endings have their pros and cons.

See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. It is said to be a most haunted room and the scene of many deaths.

He soon finds his scepticism tested to the max. Although it has deep themes of grief et al, this essentially boils down to one man in a room being plagued by psychological and physical attacks, with the intended chills and shocks surreal in presentation.

It's all very twisty and big on conundrums, which makes a second viewing something of a necessity, whilst Cusack's performance is also reason to check in for another viewing.

However, it's not the scary movie some have lauded it as, in fact it's more fun-house palaver than anything terrifying, but there's no doubting the intelligence and skill of the writing.

The mind is a curious, wonderful and troubling thing, and wants us to know it. Mike Enslin writes books evaluating supernatural phenomena in hotels, graveyards and other haunted places, usually debunking the mystery.

He travels to New York to spend one night in room of the Dolphin Hotel, which is permanently unavailable for guests.

Reluctant manager Gerald Olin objects to his request and offers an upgrade, expensive booze and finally the reports relating the death of more than fifty guests along decades in the room.

After so many years of bad Stephen King horror movies, this finally brings the writers imagination back to the screen, and its mainly thanks to Jackson and Cusack.

Usually with King movies, you don't get two actors as prolific as this, with the exception of a few, and when there are limited characters in the film Misery, and The Shining , we have more time to focus on the main characters.

For the most part, its the John Cusack show, and like him or not, he really puts in a great performance as the cynic who finally starts to believe. Jackson is great, but he is little more than en extended cameo.

Its pretty scary, and deals with loss to good effect, and whichever version you have seen, its still a satisfying, unnerving experience.

And it was refreshing to see a 'classical' ghost story released during a time when every other horror movie relied on gore for the thrills.

I can honestly say that this is high on the list of the worse films I have watched. The overall plot is totally ludicrous.

The acting, oh dear the acting, is bad beyond belief. It is a film worthy of the waste bin. I really struggled to watch it through to the end but I wanted to see if it would get any worse and sad to say it did.

Report abuse. The premise of the film - sceptic stays night in haunted hotel and gets haunted - might not win any awards for originality, but is a well made film, delivering some decent scares.

The build-up is fairly slow-burn, with the film's strengths coming mainly from the well-judged acceleration in events from the innocuous to the dramatic.

Like many modern horror films, it maybe loses its way slightly in trying to reach a grand, audience-pleasing denouement, which seems somewhat as odds with its more realistic and haunting beginnings.

However, there are enough genuine frights along the way and a good central performance from Cusack to make this a recommended watch for all horror fans.

Interestingly, neither the actual or alternative endings on the DVD are the one I saw at the cinema. And this is a good thing. Need it sooner? Audition [Blu-ray].
