Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, go on a ferry boat to Shutter Island, the home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient, Rachel Solando who was incarcerated for drowning her three children.

Despite being kept in a locked cell under constant supervision, she has escaped the hospital and the desolate island.

In Rachel's room, Teddy and Chuck discover a code that Teddy breaks. He tells Chuck that he believes the code points to a 67th patient, when records show only Teddy also reveals that he wants to avenge the death of his wife Dolores, who was murdered two years prior by a man called Andrew Laeddis, whom he believes is an inmate in Ashecliffe Hospital.

After Hurricane Carol hits the island, Teddy and Chuck investigate Ward C, where Teddy believes government experiments with psychotropic drugs are being conducted.

While separated from Chuck for a short while in Ward C, Teddy meets a patient called George Noyce, who tells him that everything is an elaborate game designed for him, and that Chuck is not to be trusted.

In my opinion, it was absolutely perfect. I didn't feel bored for even a single second. The story was fast paced, but not too fast - it had just the right pace.

I fell in love with the characters pretty much right away. I'm not even exactly sure why, all of them just seemed interesting in their own way.

Enough of their backstory was given for me to become attached to them and I would love to have even more material with them. However, I wouldn't actually want to read a sequel.

The book ends in the perfect way and any additional scenes would ruin it Somehow I was able to avoid spoilers. And I'm so glad I did, because this definitely made the story more exciting and suspenseful.

So going into more detail in my review would be pointless. Just read the book and be amazed! As a side note: The movie is absolutely amazing as well and one of the best book-to-movie adaptions I have ever seen.

But even though more than 24 hours passed, I still haven't processed it even a bit. Not in a long time did I read a book that grabbed me as Shutter Island did.

When I was reading this book, and I had to put it down to do some other stuff, it followed me everywhere. When I wasn't reading it, I su When I wasn't reading it, I surely was thinking about it.

Shutter Island crawled under my skin, and it will stay there for a long time. Even now, when I finished it, I'm sure that it will be somewhere in the back of my mind for a long time.

I'm not going to say anything about the plot, because I think that this book should be read without knowing anything about it.

If you are planning to read this book, just read it without researching what it is about, and have it in mind that even if you guess the twist, don't let that take away the enjoyment of reading it.

I guessed one part of the twist somewhere in the middle, but what blew my mind was what that twist did to the characters in the story.

Not everything is about the twist. This was my Lehane's second book I read Mystic River a while back , and it's definitely my favorite book by him so far.

Truly an amazing book, that will stay with me for a long, long time. View all 5 comments. I honestly thought my opinion of this book would be greatly influenced by my having seen the film, but it wasn't.

I was completely blown away reading this one. This was probably one of the best psychological thrillers I've ever read.

I loved how I got confused and then thought I figured it out, but then was totally confused all over again, until right near the end, at which point everything came to light.

This is one of those cases where the book and the film are equal to each other. They are both so fantastic.

The movie really follows the book greatly. This is not one of those things where one is totally different then the other so if you are reading this and you, like myself, started with the movie..

Not only does it have the same creepy and eerie atmosphere but the prose is intense and the end actually pulls things together better then the film did.

The set-up story roped me in. It took me far too long to figure out what was going on. I caught the signs Lehane shoved my why, but I willfully ignored them.

Yes, looking back on them, I ignored them like a step-child. Though the anagrams, the numbers, and then the very obvious prophetic dreams all stuck in the back of my head and told me that thins weren't as they seemed, I ignored them all in favor of trying to figure out Rachel Solando's impossible escape.

Despite this, the book was suspenseful and exciting - I really believed the unreliable narrator and thought it was incredible how the story unraveled and then twisted at the end.

Each character was mysterious with both protagonistic and antagonistic qualities - I was never sure who was on the right or wrong side if there even were sides and who to trust - much like the main character felt I imagine.

I haven't read this in a while but I remember it being such a great example of a popular best-seller that fully deserved the attention it got!

It's a first-rate psychological thriller and mystery, and I felt like Lehane did everything right. With its 's setting, to the Gothic feel of the location, the incredibly potent ambiance created by setting the story during a storm, it's shocking twists, it's brooding protagonist, and it's locked-room locked-island?

It's also definitely one of the most atmospheric books I've read. It has such a moody, creepy tone, I can still remember the feeling it gave me while reading it late at night before bed.

I remember being engrossed and transported. And although not as emotionally gripping as Mystic River , it's a tighter narrative and another amazing notch on Lehane's bibliography.

Multiple-murderess Rachel Solando is loose somewhere on this barren island, despite having been kept in a locked cell under constant surveillance.

As a killer hurricane bears relentlessly down on them, a strange case takes on even darker, more sinister shades--with hints of radical experimentation, horrifying surgeries, and lethal countermoves made in the cause of a covert shadow war.

No one is going to escape Shutter Island unscathed, because nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is remotely what it seems.

I'm not even sure what to say about this book without giving anything away. As Daniels uncovers secrets, you become more confused about what is actually happening at the hospital.

What if you could control it? There are only 2 ways to reach or leave the island. By ferry, or by a nice swim in the icy water. Teddy suffers from migraines, which Chuck quickly picks up on during their arrival on the ferry and Chuck never fails to have cigarettes handy.

Both men have some baggage, both have their stories. Upon arrival to the facility, the marshals have to surrender their weapons and begin their investigations.

They quickly figure out, that things are strange around. The ratio of wardens to patients, the gambling habits of the wardens, the interviews of personnel and patients….

I'm not. Of course what else would a crazy person claim? That's the Kafkaesque genius of it all. If you're not crazy but people have told the world you are, then all your protests to the contrary just underscore their point.

Do you see what I'm saying? Your sound protests constitute denial. Your valid fears are deemed paranoia.

Your survival instincts are labeled defense mechanisms. Jagged cliffs, caves and a lighthouse. Where has this patient gone? The weather is getting bad, a hurricane is looming.

Someone along the way tells them, the patient has been found. Maybe due to stress, Teddy has a migraine attack and flashbacks from his past.

He is given meds and his mind is going in and out between reality and or an alternate reality?! Conversations with his partner seem to alert him.

Was there a trip up? Is there more to his new partner? You surfaced without history, then spent the blinks and yawns reassembling your past, shuffling the shards into chronological order before fortifying yourself for the present.

Trapped on this island…. I have not seen the movie, but I will do that next. All I can say is that this book was so Dennis Lehane style.

Twists and turns, mind bending games, questioning everything…. What is going on? Prepare yourself to be shocked.

I can't control myself, I literally feel like lying on the floor and just let everything that I have read sink in. It's set in an Island which has high security and some of the most vile criminals.

They soon discover that there is more to this Island than meets the eye. They sound like real people when they communicate between themselves in the book and I freaking loved it.

How many? It was interesting to see how the schizophrenic, paranoid, sociopaths and so many other were portrayed.

The puzzles played with your head and it was exciting to have that feeling again where you suspect everyone I am so happy that I picked this book out randomly because it was everything and more I don't want to say much about it because it is better if you go in blind : Highly recommend it and I also can't wait to see the movie adaptation of this one May 24, Kelly and the Book Boar rated it liked it Shelves: read-in Marshalls have been dispatched to Shutter Island - a location much like Alcatraz which houses an inescapable fortress for insane prisoners.

What the duo initially came to investigate and what they actually end up discovering are VERY different things. Lehane's writing is so above-par that giving him a measly 3 seems blasphemous.

However, it's a 3 I must give. I actually never even knew Shutter Island was a movie until I brought this library book home I like to stick to only raunchy comedies and B-grade horrors for my viewing pleasure, apparently and my husband told me how good it was.

And it was good. At some point there has to be some unexpected twists and turns, and that just wasn't the case with Shutter Island. FYI - I'm also one of " those people " who ruined "The Sixth Sense" for all when I immediately knew the ending - and shouted it out because no one would have believe me if I hadn't - so if you're not good at figuring out what's up, you might be blown out of the water with this one.

It was the second e-book I bought. I wanted to read it before the movie came out. That was enough for me. It was historical fiction with some suspense and psychological thriller.

This is a really good book. I would go into it blind if at all possible. The magnitude of what some of the archetypes mean as they appear randomly before you come to represent I had never read Lehane before or anything like it.

If I get a chance I want to get a physical copy. This was gothic, haunting, eerie, of a different time and yet you felt you were with the two investigators.

US Marshal Teddy Daniels shows up at rocky island that's an asylum for the criminally insane to track a patient that disappeared from a locked cell.

While on the island, he gets the sense that the doctors are hiding something and sets out to obtain evidence that they are experimenting illegally on patients.

I'm vague to I'm not even sure what to say about this book without giving anything away. I'm vague to avoid spoilers, but none of this will make sense unless you've read the book or seen the movie : My favorite part of the book was the what added the psychological thriller: an insane person will claim he or she is not insane.

Ergo, if you claim you are sane, you are insane. All the witnesses were unreliable, but we have to trust what the protagonist sees and believes until he figures out the next clue.

Throw in conspiracy theories, and you never know what to trust. I loved the story shift and the foreshadowing and that even though he couldn't figure out why, Daniels could tell he couldn't trust these people.

There were some brilliant moments, like the scene with Noyce that could be misconstrued one way or the other, depending on which story option you believe.

My least favorite parts: -The gratuitous language and sexual content, especially the scene with his wife. Was that necessary?

It didn't add anything to the story and it actually made me reluctant to pick it up for a few days. How is crazy making a curing technique?

Take the conversation with Trey about the fence, which is the only moment in the book where no one is playing games, but why? It's the one scene that keeps me from believing the second option.

I still think the concept of the book was brilliant. Even though I was bound and determined to figure out that twist, I didn't.

Lehane leaves the ending somewhat open, but it's clear which option we're supposed to believe. I don't know though, some drugs, the power of suggestion, a plausible story, I'm not discounting either one.

That's kind of the point of the story, the uncertainty of reality for the insane. Creepy or sad, what do you choose to believe?

As a story bears down on the island Teddy and Chuck must race to discover how this woman escaped a locked room, and what really is happening on Shutter Island.

From beginning to end this book hooked me. It may have been a very different experience I believe had I seen the movie, but going into this completely blind made for an intriguing read through twists and turns.

I knew it was quite a dark book, but I don't think I was prepared for how dark. I am definitely interested to see what else this author has written.

There isn't much I can say about this book without spoiling it, trust me: the least you know about what this book is about, the better.

What I enjoyed the most about this book was the characters and the amazing setting. Two detectives are sent to investigate a mental institution on an isolated island, which gives this story a very sinister tone.
