I can see why this got an Oscar. That is backed up by an interesting story too, which is powerful, and focuses on the effects of post trauma and getting revenge for those you love.

Ian W Super Reviewer. Jan 24, When the film opens, a married couple, Emad Shahab Hosseini and Rana Taraneh Alidoosti must evacuate their apartment as the walls crumble due to nearby construction gone awry.

It's an apt analogy of the cracks soon to come in their marriage. Both have taken on the lead roles in the Miller play, with Emad doing double duty as beloved school teacher.

Once safely out of the apartment, the couple move into the temporary digs of a woman who has yet to clear out one room, leaving behind personal belongings and a reputation as a prostitute.

Although the prior tenant never appears in the film, her existence and perceived morality linger over everything that transpires. One evening, Rana prepares to take a shower and buzzes her intercom to presumably let her husband into the building.

She leaves the front door open as she heads to the bathroom, the camera lingering on that door for too many beats for anything good to come of it.

It's a masterful moment and one in which I felt Farhadi took a giant leap forward in visual, suspenseful storytelling.

Rana suffers from a traumatic event, the details of which seem murky at best, and Emad makes it his cause to find the perpetrator to exact some type of revenge against him.

Rana's emotional collapse and Emad's obsessions have an impact on the play, which is itself an examination of the last gasps of male power.

It's here where the film's true subversiveness slyly makes itself known. Despite being the victim of a bloody assault, Rana's concerns have little weight next to Emad's quietly seething rage.

While assault goes unreported in most of the world, the decision to go to the authorities have much wider ranging implications in more stringent patriarchal societies such as Iran, where the shame brought on the families can outweigh the needs of the victims.

Farhadi excels in these moments where glances replace reams of dialogue to convey the couples' stifled feelings. He's helped immeasurably by two actors at the top of their games.

Hosseini justifiably received recognition for perfectly capturing the unraveling of a seemingly gentle man, but it's Alidoosti who astonishes as a woman dying inside not so much from what happened in that bathroom but for being shut out of her own life by the person who loves her the most.

The way she looks at her husband throughout the story feels like a one woman March On Tehran. With her gloriously open expressiveness, she slowly but surely exerts her power as best she can.

She has a similar gift to that of Amy Adams, the ability to be on the verge of tears while exuding commanding strength.

Rather than tend to his wife's needs, Emad plays amateur detective to track down the assailant. The last third of the film, while still well within the realm of neorealism, carries elements of Hitchcockian suspense such as the way Emad chases after a suspect, or in the quietly shocking way the "bad guy" gets revealed.

From there, we're left with the unbearable tension of a revenge fantasy come to awkward, real life. We feel the messiness of it in the way health issues play into the proceedings, in the way a distraught wife painfully navigates a set of stairs, or in the raw brutality of a slap across a face.

While growing as a visual storyteller, Farhadi gets a little tripped up with his depiction of the play within the movie.

Maybe he resisted the thudding obviousness of using excerpts from the play that has a direct correlation to the main story, but as it stands, the connections seem oblique at best.

It may provide more resonance. Farhadi, perhaps in his attempts to get his films made, seems to play both sides by clearly giving voice to women, who get blamed for being temptresses for men, and to men who seemingly have no choice but to exert their power.

The inciting incident in this film affects everyone and everything around them, and yet the person it affects the most matters the least. The fact that this got past the censors and has become the highest grossing film in Iran tells me even they recognize a problem that can no longer be ignored.

Oh, who am I kidding? Things may never change. It's possible for men to stay in power and allow for dissenting voices, right? It still happens here too.

It is about a young couple who are forced to relocate to another house after their apartment building was declared not safe anymore for some kind of construction taking place in the nieghbourhood which is affecting it.

The man is managing his job at a school as a teacher and the remaining time as a theatre artist along with his wife. The life was as usual, till one day something bad happens to his wife at home in his absence.

Now he's raged to find the culprit, but once if he did what happens and how the story ends was the another twist. I mean the opening scene was like racy.

And then following, it slowed to build the momentum. That does not mean the characters were developed so well. It only moves forward with constructing what are all needed for later parts.

Once it enters the third act, the scenario changes. It looked like another film, another genre. Too tense moment and tight plot for the grand finale.

Yep, that is the part makes this film to forget everything you saw in the earlier. Whatever happened in that part, I felt it was right, though I think culturally it differs the outcome.

I mean, that's not philosophically the Iran we know or the religion they worship. You can say the western films badly portrayed them in their films, but if you look at their history, the film ending was shocking.

So I thought, the end chaos was for among themselves. If the outsiders westerners were involved, it would have been a differently dealt.

Very good performances. But not perfectly written screenplay as I pointed out a few things in the earlier paragraphs.

And another thing was, the character, particularly the mysterious one, I was not satisfied how it had been developed. He enters the frame only at the last moment.

The narration was very suspense and a bit thriller, but then all the sudden everything comes crumbling down since the end was very near to cease the procession.

My point is, how that X man was netted does not make sense in reality. Being a film, it has no problem at all.

So, it was a good film, but not as good as it was praised or won the Oscars. Yeah, definitely worth a watch. The setting was very good, except the ending, as the opinion differs from people to people and the amount of damage on how to deal with such situation.

Overall, a little good message at the end, but not exactly a moral message as it brings more destruction towards the GOOD over the BAD which always win with a strong sentimental grip, no matter whoever involved in it.

Unfortunately, these directors are only showing the negatives of Iran, and hell yes, they are magnifying the issue x! Normal Main Street Iranians have never experienced such stuff.

After A separation and now with the salesman Farhadi can be considered as a great master in directing suspenseful family drama like Hitchcock.

The Salesman, may not be as revolutionary as A Separation, but it's still a piece of magic that shows how powerful storytelling can be thanks to Asghar Farhadi , and it's undeniably moving, from start to finish.

Farhadi knows how to tell a story. With intensity in his patience and eye for detail, he builds thrilling plot out of ordinary circumstances, and enriches it with thought provoking ideas.

Like always, he yet again manages to draw remarkable performances from his cast. About Elly and A Farhadi knows how to tell a story. About Elly and A Seperation are two more films I would recommend from his filmography.

I'm not just addicted to Hollywood. I'm a film fanatic because I give equal preference to films of the whole world.

So I have seen as many as this year's submission for the Oscars in the category of the Foreign Language Films. And there are lots better films than this, that even did not make into the final five.

From my perspective, this is an okay film, even comparing with the rest of the fellow nominees, including that I thought that would win, 'Under Sandet'.

The mess is all because of Trump effect, as same reason 'Moonlight' to win the main trophy. At least it was not an average film like 'A Separation', though not a masterpiece like 'The Past' that did not even nominated for the Oscars.

MDarwish May 26, This movie depicts the Iranian Muslims way more different than they are. It's a book of two halves as well; the first concerning a man's descent, interwoven with flashbacks so that by the time we get to the second half we know all we can about Billy Sweeney.

The plot of the second half Challenging but also gripping. The plot of the second half does challenge belief but being so expertly constructed and written that one accepts the unusual situation.

Christmas at the O'Connor household must be a bundle of laughs; with his sister's songs and his cheery books I bet the cracker jokes must seem hilarious.

Nov 27, S Murdoch rated it really liked it. I loved this book. Not what you'd call a 'feel good' read, but I look for more than that from a book anyway.

The main characters, although far from likeable, are nevertheless intriguing and the storyline is not predictable. Suffice to say that when I found myself awake in the middle of the night, as I often do, I couldn't resist the urge to read a few pages which invariably led to me reading for an hour.

A superb book,i highly recommend it,one of my all time favourites!! Too much waffle. A man named Sweeney writes a diary to his daughter who is lying in a coma after a violent robbery.

He tells her his life story, his stormy relationship with his wife and alcohol, and his plans to take revenge on one of the robbers who has escaped justice, a man named Quinn, the books only interesting character.

Sweeney abducts Quinn, holds him prisoner, but is unable to follow through on his plan to kill him, but then the tables are turned and Quinn has the upper hand, and then they reconcile, of course, only for 'natural justice' to be meted out anyway by a higher power.

The main failing of this book is that it fails to tell us the inner workings of Sweeney's mind during the confinement of Quinn, and how he comes to reconcile with him.

This is a major flaw. Sweeney can't get out of a car or look out of a window without filling the diary with reams of detail about what he sees, hears, etc, and he's very forthcoming on his feelings and emotions too, but he never writes anything in this diary about his relationship with Quinn.

By this stage of the book, the diary structure has broken down a little, there's lots of dialogue, and we forget this is all supposed to be a story bring told to Sweeney's comatose daughter, until it pops up again in a phrase addressed to her.

At which point you think, what about explaining what's happening with Quinn? I found this a major flaw, together with overly long descriptive passages which should've been edited out.

In short, there is far too much surface detail and not enough insight. I am not familiar with this author's work, this is the only book I've read by him.

It was a well-construed, strong and flawless first person narration. Moreover, the novel is skilfully composed as a letter from a stricken father to his comatose daughter.

Billy Sweeney is an ordinary citizen with ordinary problems work, marriage, alcoholism , who is prone to verbal incontinence and bad decision-making, yet his voice draws you into the ups and downs of his life journey and adds comedy to all its tragic developments.

The characters are well-drawn, the sense of place is strong, and the Irish speech patterns sound enjoyably authentic. Favourite quotation. After Sweeney had tracked down the villain, I wished he would have simply called the police.

During the middle part, in that stalling double hostage situation, I thought I was trapped in "The Crying Game", and I was close to quitting the read.

I am nonetheless ambivalent about it because I found the turn of events in the second half of the book to be literally incredible--as in not to be believed.

The plot begins very compellingly, but as the focus of the narrative narrows to the relationship between Billy Sweeney and Quinn, it slides from the dramatic to the melodramatic in my opinion.

Even as I was shaking my head and thinking "no one would do this" thou I like O'Connor's writing in general, and stylistically this book is excellent.

The salesman of the title is a dumpy middle-aged satellite dish salesman who pissed away his family and life as an alcoholic.

He's been sober for years, trying to raise his daughter by himself when she is attacked and put into a coma.

One of the defendants escapes, and the salesman is left frustrated and angry. When he happens to see the escapee on the street on Written as a diary, this is a brilliant novel of suspense, love, loneliness, alcoholism, fatherhood, redemption and of course, tragedy.

When he happens to see the escapee on the street one day he daydreams of revenge. The suspense builds and builds as he follows the criminal and plots his revenge.

Interspersed with this is his recounting of meeting his wife and their life together, which he tries to explain to his daughter. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

This novel could have been placed in Budapest. As Irl and Hung are cousins, for sure. The people in the story were so simple and yet amazingly complicated.

Real life people and I just wanted to tell them, that they are okay. As much as I was angry at Billy, I could understand his motifs.

And ultimately finding a friend. This guy Quinn attacked you. To be honest, I became so sleepy while reading this.

Overall, I would not recommend this book. It honestly felt like something someone in 2nd year 8th grade would write and then got someone to edit for them.

One of my favourite books. A beautiful story. A book I've reread several times over the years. Jan 09, Helen Woods rated it it was amazing. One of my favourite books of all time so started on a high re-reading it.

This is the earliest of his novels that I have read so far, set in and published in It is narrated by Billy Sweeney, an electrical salesman whose daughter lies in a coma in hospital after a vicious attack by four men.

When one of the men escapes from Garda custody, Sweeney decides to find him and murder him. There are other flaws in plot too, smaller ones.

A pleasant surprise came in that the book was set in Bray, Dalkey, Dun Laoghaire and Dublin which meant no imagination required for me! It starts going around in circles and gets quite tedious.

But it picks up at the end again with quite a sad finale. Shelves: read-it. My friend Bridget loaned me this book. It's an Irish story, which almost always tells me it's not going to be a happy, Pollyanna romp.

It has been one of the most unique books I've ever read - the protagonist has undergone transformation and violent change, he's not such a nice guy, and yet you still identify with him and you want to believe it's all going to turn out alright.

This is a great story. It's about a man in Dublin who suffers a shocking loss and in an effort to deal with it he starts to keep a journal, his journal is the book.

The story's so well told you'll be laughing out loud at some of the characters and their carrying on and their expressions but you'll also be afraid to turn the page at times for fear of what's going to happen next, but you will turn the page because you couldn't not go on reading.

Sometimes I loved reading this book, and at other times I found it dragged a bit and seemed a bit repetitive. My overall opinion is that although I liked the writing style and the storyline I wished it was not quite so long-winded.

I know many thought this a black story. I did not find it black but more like a roller coaster of emotions that compelled you to keep reading.

This book is not what you think it is something else. You need to read it to know what I mean. This is not a feel good book but a readable compelling story.
