It's not really a conventional sports movie. It puts all that stuff on its head". Pratt took three months to work out and shed 30 pounds, which ultimately led to him winning the role.

The score was composed by Mychael Danna , with whom Miller worked with on Capote. Moneyball premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, , [32] and was released theatrically on September 23, , by Columbia Pictures.

The website's critical consensus reads: "Director Bennett Miller, along with Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, take a niche subject and turn it into a sharp, funny, and touching portrait worthy of baseball lore.

Roger Ebert , in his four star review, praised the film for its "intelligence and depth", specifically highlighting the screenplay and its "terse, brainy dialogue".

Stevens also highlighted Hill's performance, finding the role "gives him the chance to be funny, not by wisecracking broadly but by underreacting".

The result is an interesting but frustrating near-miss". Hartlaub also criticized the film's runtime. These players were discovered via traditional scouting methods, and were key contributors to the success of the Athletics.

Howe also stated producers of the Miller version of the film didn't contact him to consult on his portrayal.

Within three or four simple single hits, you'd score - in theory. While it's not as fashionable as hitting a double or slamming a home run out of the park, it allowed Beane's side to operate in an entirely different market to bigger teams, and thus bring in players that fit the new policy.

Players who had been completely undervalued and thrown out by others. There's a lot more to it than that, but the simple elevator pitch of the idea is that if a club cannot spend its way into the player market, it must find an inefficiency within that market to exploit.

It wasn't just using data - as RBI's are data - much like passing percentages and shots on target. It was about using a new context and bringing a new intelligence to the use of data.

The problem with the English use of the phrase Moneyball is that market inefficiencies are somewhat harder to define in football - soccer - than they were in baseball.

For example - Moneyball as a buzzword was assigned to Villa's transfer approach in which saw the club purchase Jordan Ayew, Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Veretout.

In fairness, footballing Moneyball cannot be compared well at all to its baseball origins. Baseball is a static sport based on rounds of dynamic action.

Football has no static action aside from set-pieces. It requires a different approach. Liverpool - owned by Boston Red Sox supremo John Henry - took a number of lessons over from baseball analytics to better their recruitment and set pieces, but in the same way that large baseball teams didn't need intense analysis to succeed, the lessons that elite teams take from the analysis of metrics is different - not poorer.

For example, how can a team like Liverpool exploit market inefficiencies when in general, they purchase popular and well-known players for good money?

It's assumed every purchase of a Swedish or Danish player is an attempt at Moneyball as well - but that's closer to the truth as Scandinavian markets are not hugely popular amongst Premier League teams.

What about Scotland? Clubs find value in the Scottish market, but they always have done, right? It's not an unknown.

The reason that the above is closer to Moneyball is this - it's using a value nationality to find a player who is undervalued - costing less than they should.

Beane's use of on-base percentages were somewhat mirrored by Sam Allardyce in his time at Bolton - with Wanderers competing in Europe during his time at the club using high-scoring areas targeted by routine long balls from his players.

Bolton couldn't play pretty football, but they found a way to utilise experienced players well by finding space in key areas very quickly - with Allardyce plugged into club analysts constantly.

The same rules followed by Beane's Oakland team do exist in English football, and in a really obvious place.

It's low-hanging fruit to pick out Brentford, but if you're looking for a club that needed to exploit the market to succeed, they exist.

Brentford's wage budgets and transfer spending is well funded by the manner it is able to take advantage of bigger clubs by scouting well.

For example, Villa fans know all too well about Brentford - having been beaten regularly by the 'smaller' team, while paying good money for players the Bees put on the map.

One such example is current Villan Scott Hogan, who Brentford picked out as a massive overperformer playing at Championship level in an unfashionable league.

He joined the Bees, stepped up to a level that Brentford saw possible, and then was sold on - to Villa - for a big fee. If Moneyball's market inefficiency exists prior to the purchase, it also exists afterwards.

Hogan was picked out by Brentford as it was clear to their analysts that he would succeed in Brentford's system. There is no guarantee he would succeed elsewhere, and thus the second inefficiency occurs - that teams who need players in certain positions won't have to think twice about spending big.

Arguably Brentford's method evolved from succeeding from the players they bought by profiting quickly, to succeeding with them by keeping them on the pitch in a red-and-white striped shirt.

Brentford also found an inefficiency in running an expensive academy that wasn't truly providing their younger players with a roadmap. Routinely beaten to London-born talent by Charlton, West Ham, Fulham and Arsenal amongst others, Brentford scrapped their academy side and built a touring B-team to play against stronger youth sides using purchased young talent that couldn't find a route in other teams.

However, once those tactics are copied and the bar is raised - it's less Moneyball and more being smart. Less revolutionary and more keeping to high standards.

Brentford evolved past their approach and have become a genuinely successful side that will reach the Premier League either this season or next.

Now, what they performed a number of years ago is somewhat of a norm. Another example heading back to Denmark exists in Brentford's sister club FC Midtjylland - who took the static nature of set pieces, found inefficiency in corner, throw-ins and free-kick schemes and discovered goals that nobody else was scoring.

Something that then became a norm in the league. FC Midtjylland scored over double the amount of goals from set-plays than anyone else in the Danish league.

When their methods were publicised a Moneyball no-no, because really - what's the point in finding the inefficiency and telling everyone about it?

Suddenly, everyone else was hitting double digits in set-piece goals. So, are Villa using Moneyball? Probably not.

Villa are a bigger club, with a big budget. If they are finding inefficiencies it's probably in the typical 'cheaper' kind of player - one with a recent injury, or one who cannot get first team football - rather than revolutionising the sport.

Moneyball would require them to find something - a stat - that would highlight a path to victory before any other team has it on their radar.

Perhaps that is, and has been in set pieces. If they are using Moneyball in recruitment, however, it won't be obvious - and the players they sign will raise eyebrows.

May 08, Baseball is an unfair game, some teams play in larger markets and have more money to spend on players, such as the New York Yankees.

Then other teams play in smaller markets and have to watch their best players sign elsewhere for more money than they can offer.

How do you replace those players? And with what money? The scouts are all quite older than Beane, they are trying to replace those players using the same techniques that have failed before when valuing a player.

Beane knows that firsthand. In a flashback, he was scouted by the New York Mets and touted as a five-tool player. These scouts say this is a once in a time opportunity and he has to go all out if he wants a shot in Major League Baseball.

His parents seemed skeptical and want him to take his Stanford scholarship. On a trip to Cleveland trying to find a replacement for Damon in a trade, he comes across Peter Brand Jonah Hill , a man whose opinion is so valued by the Indians organization that Beane buys his contract.

Brand convinces Beane that players are judged on superficial means and some are undervalued. He conceives compiling a team of misfit players on a budget by buying runs.

They base their decision almost solely on on-base percentage. They sign a player who can no longer be a catcher named Scott Hatteberg Chris Pratt to be their new first baseman.

They trade for David Justice Stephen Bishop for his high on-base percentage and the fact that the New York Yankees will pay half his salary just to get rid of him.

The season gets off to a rocky start starting off at , Beane starts getting upset with the way Howe is using his team. Howe is putting Carlos Pena in over Hatteberg.

Beane retaliates by trading Pena away forcing Howe to put Hatteberg into the lineup. The team improves over the season and they go on a win streak before ending the season with more wins than the previous season with those star players.

Although the film makes it seem like it's due to these sabermetric ideas, the film never even mentions star shortstop Miguel Tejada and third baseman Eric Chavez, pitchers Barry Zito, Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder.

If the season wasn't successful, this never would have been a movie. It's still a great movie that does a great job making a movie about baseball, that isn't about baseball.

It's about how you compete in a game that is almost rigged for the teams with more money. The film deduces that you always have a winner with money but then shreds that idea by presenting the story of the Oakland Athletics.

Joseph B Super Reviewer. Apr 04, The story of Billy Beane and how he adapted and built a team with only what he was given was insightful on how the business side of sports is run.

Kameron W Super Reviewer. Mar 27, The central one is Billy Beane , whose failed playing career is contrasted with wildly optimistic predictions by scouts.

Beane assembled a list of twenty players they would draft in a "perfect world"; meaning if money was no object and they didn't have to compete with the other twenty-nine teams.

Richard H. Sunstein of the University of Chicago Law School described the book as a "sensation Lewis has a wonderful story to tell, and he tells it wonderfully Lewis also raises some serious puzzles that he does not resolve, and his account has some large and perhaps profound implications that he does not much explore.

David Haglund of Slate and Jonah Keri of Grantland have both criticized the book for glossing over key young talent acquired through the draft and signed internationally.

Specifically, they have argued that the book ignores the pitching trio of Tim Hudson , Mark Mulder , and Barry Zito , as well as position players such as Eric Chavez and Miguel Tejada , all of whom were discovered via traditional scouting methodology and were key contributors to the success of the Athletics.

A movie based on the book was released in Academy Award -winning screenwriter Steve Zaillian was hired to write the script, and Steven Soderbergh was slated to direct, replacing David Frankel.

Bennett Miller took over directing duties, [17] and Aaron Sorkin rewrote the script. Bill James made an appearance in this episode.

The film adaptation is mentioned in Brooklyn Nine-Nine as being Captain Raymond Holt's favourite film because of the beauty of its statistical analysis.
